BOB FRIEND AND ELROY FACE COMBINE ON 3 HIT SHUTOUT OF PHILLIES
Bob Friend(3-0) won his third straight decision with a stellar performance against the Philadelphia Phillies. Friend limited the Phils to just three hits, while fanning eight. He only issued two walks.
Friend was locked in a scoreless battle with Robin Roberts for most of the game. The Pirates made the decision to pinch hit for Friend in the bottom of the eighth, after Don Hoak reached with a single.
The decision paid off, as Rocky Nelson pinch hit and also singled. Philadelphia shelved Roberts for Chuck Short. His outing didn’t go well, for after retiring Bob Skinner, Bill Virdon singled in Hoak, giving Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. Dick Groat followed with the fourth base hit of the inning. That brought in Nelson, giving the Bucs a two run lead.
Face took the mound in the last of the ninth. There was a little drama, as he allowed two singles, but a key double play and a fly out to left ended the game. Elroy of course, earned the save.
Other National League scores: Los Angeles 9 Chicago 4; Milwaukee 8 Cincinnati 5. Only games scheduled.
