VINEGAR BEND MIZELL JUST MISSES PITCHING A NO HITTER

In one of the best games pitched in the history of Stratball, Pittsburgh’s Vinegar Bend Mizell tossed a one hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Philadelphia’s lone hit came in the bottom of the sixth, when Lee Walls stroked a two out triple into the corner. Walls would be stranded at third base. There was nothing cheap about Walls’ three bagger, but other than that and two walks, both taken to full counts, Mizell was completely dominant.

Mizell set down the first nine he faced, before losing Bennie Del Greco to a free pass to open the fourth inning. The dangerous Walls also drew a walk in the fifth, before breaking through with the Phillies only hit, the very next inning.

Vinegar Bend struck out eight.

For the Pirates, offensively, Bob Skinner had a three for five day, with a double and two runs scored. Don Hoak(2) homered, Dick Groat and Bill Mazeroski both had a pair of hits.

The Pirates next head to Cincinnati to play the Reds.

There was only one other game in the league, San Francisco defeated the L.A. Dodgers, 7-5.
