ANOTHER TIMELY PINCH HIT SINKS PIRATES SHIP
For the second game in a row, Pittsburgh lost on a key pinch hit. This time, it was Dick Gernert of the Chicago Cubs who came through.
Gernert singled in George Altman in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Cubs a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh.
After getting a quick two outs in the last of the ninth, Fred Green(1-1), who had relieved starter, Vinegar Bend Mizell, suddenly lost his control. He walked two batters and hit one, loading the bases.
Clem Daniels came in but couldn’t put out the fire, surrendering Gernert’s game winning hit.
The Pirate offense was limited to just two hits, Dick Groat getting two of them.
