PIRATES LOSE IN BOTTOM OF NINTH AGAIN; THIRD STRAIGHT LOSS
The Cubs beat the Pirates for the second straight day, again winning in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Ernie Banks singled in Don Zimmer, who had walked off Joe Gibbon(0-2), to begin the inning. Richie Ashburn sacrifice Zimmer to second, then Banks’ single plated him, giving Chicago a 4-3 victory.
The game was knotted at three to that point. The Cubs got three quick runs in the top of the first off Harvey Haddix. The Pirates got a run back in the top of the second, when Haddix singled in Geno Comoli. Pittsburgh later scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh to tie it up.
The loss is the third in a row for Pittsburgh, who now heads out for their first west coast road trip of the year.
