PIRATES HAVE NICE, BOUNCEBACK WIN TO OPEN GIANTS SERIES

After dropping three straight, the Pittsburgh Pirates had a nice bounce back win, defeating the San Francisco Giants, 7-4, to begin their west coast run.

Vern Law(3-0) went the distance. Though he allowed 4 runs, he limited the Giants to only five hits. Give San Francisco credit for making the most out of their hits. Willie Mays tripled and scored on a Willie McCovey sacrifice fly. McCovey himself, homered and Orlando Cepeda also doubled.

For the Pirates, Rocky Nelson gave Dick Stuart a break, and had three hits and two runs batted in. Dick Groat, Bill Mazeroski, Don Hoak and Smoky Burgess all chipped in with two hits apiece.

A five run, seventh inning against Sam Jones was the death knell for the Giants.

Other National League scores: Cincinnati 1 St. Louis 0; Philadelphia 6 Los Angeles 2. Only games scheduled.
