BUCS GET CLEMENTE BACK BUT LOSE ONCE AGAIN IN BOTTOM OF NINTH
Pittsburgh welcomed the return of star right fielder, Roberto Clemente, playing in his first game after a stint on the 15 day disabled list, yet for the third time this season, they lost a game on a walkoff hit.
This time it was Giants’ shortstop, Eddie Bressoud’s 9th inning, homerun against Tom Cheney(0-2) that did the trick.
Trailing 4-1, the Pirates took the lead after scoring four times in the top of the eighth, including a three run homer by Bill Virdon(3). However, in the bottom half of that inning, Willie McCovey matched Virdon with a clout of his own, off Clem Lebine, retying the game.
Cheney took over for Lebine and Bressoud ended things quickly in the ninth, for a 6-5 Giants win.
Clemente had a triple in four at bats and also reached on an error, scoring twice. In addition to his homerun, Virdon also tripled, in fact, there were three triples in the game, as San Francisco’s Bob Schmidt also had a three bagger.
The rubber game of the series will pit Vinegar Bend Mizell against Mike McCormick.
Other National League scores: Cincinnati 6 St. Louis 2; Los Angeles 3 Philadelphia 2; Milwaukee-Chicago ppd, rain.
