VIRDON HITS FOR RARE CYCLE; CLEMENTE BELTS 2 HR’S IN 15-5 ROUT OF L.A.
Bill Virdon became just the fifth player in Stratball history to hit for the cycle, a single, double, triple and homerun in one game. Roberto Clemente(2) had his best game of the year thus far, with two homers and a double and winning pitcher, Fred Green(2-1) belted a three run clout, as Pittsburgh shelled Los Angeles, 15-5.
Harvey Haddix and Don Drysdale were the starters and neither one was effective. Haddix left after just three innings, having allowed 3 runs on seven hits; Drysdale went three and a third innings and gave up 5 runs on eight hits and a walk.
The game was knotted at 5 after five innings, but the Pirates exploded for 10 runs over the final three innings.
Virdon’s memorable day began with a single off Drysdale in the first. He followed that with a triple off the big right hander in the third inning. His three run bomb off reliever, Ed Rakow, gave Pittsburgh the lead for good in the top of the seventh. Then in the top of the ninth, Virdon doubled off Ed Palmquat and advanced to third on a bobble by Duke Snider.
Lost in the shuffle was Dick Stuart(6), who went deep for the sixth time and scored four runs on the day.
A few regulars will get a day off tomorrow as Vernon Law takes on Johnny Podres.
The only other game scheduled in the National League was Milwaukee at Chicago, which was once again postponed by bad weather.
