STELLAR PIRATE PITCHING LEADS TO DOUBLE HEADER SWEEP OF BRAVES

Harvey Haddix(2-1) and Vernon Law(4-0) both won decisions in a twinbill sweep of the Milwaukee Braves.

Haddix led the troops in a 2-1 win in the opener, losing a shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth, when Dick Groat’s miscue led to Milwaukee’s only run of the game. Haddix held the Braves to just five hits against Warren Spahn, who also held Pittsburgh to five hits.

Despite the error, Groat was key to the win, driving in both Pirate runs. He knocked in Roberto Clemente, who reached on an error in the seventh, and again in the ninth, when Roberto singled to start the inning.

Game two was another complete game effort, this time by Vern Law, who also lost a bid for a shutout in Milwaukee’s final at bats. Henry Aaron hit a two run homerun against Law in the ninth, it was only the fourth hit for the Braves, the other three were singles.

The Bucs scraped together some more offense in this one, with Dick Stuart(8) getting a homer and sacrifice fly. Bob Skinner doubled and scored three runs. Dick Schofield and Don Hoak had two hits each.

Pittsburgh is off tomorrow before heading home to take on Chicago for a single game, then St. Louis.
