BUCS SURVIVE 9TH INNING RALLY BY CUBS; HOLD ON FOR 5-2 WIN
After putting up eight zeroes and with a 5-0 lead, Bob Friend(4-1) gave up four straight singles in the top of the ninth. With the score 5-1 and the bases loaded, Pittsburgh went to lefty, Joe Gibbon, to face lefthanded outfielder, George Altman. Gibby got Altman to fly out, but the second run of the inning scored, making it 5-2 Pirates.
At that point, Pittsburgh brought in Elroy Face, who retired Frank Thomas and Sammy Taylor, to end the game.
Roberto Clemente(4) hit his fourth homerun and Dick Stuart and Dick Groat had two hits each.
The St. Louis Cardinals come into Forbes Field tomorrow.
Other National League scores: San Francisco 9 Cincinnati 3; Los Angeles 6 Milwaukee 4; St. Louis at Philadelphia ppd rain.
