CARDS’ RAY SADECKI IS IMPRESSIVE IN MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher, Ray Sadecki had a very impressive big league debut, defeating, Jim Umbricht(0-2) and the Pirates, 5-3.
The rookie didn’t allow a hit over the first four innings and held a 5-0 lead when Don Hoak(3) finally tagged him for a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth. The Cards were willing to let Sadecki try for a complete game, but when he stumbled in the ninth, allowing a second run, St. Louis went to Bob Miller. Despite surrendering a third run, when Geno Cimoli singled in Dick Stuart, Miller was able to finish the game with a save.
The Pirates next welcome Willie Mays and the San Francisco Giants to town for a three game series.
Other National League scores: Cincinnati 5 Los Angeles 4; Chicago 4 Philadelphia 2; San Francisco at Milwaukee ppd rain.
