VIRDON’S SACRIFICE FLY IN BOTTOM OF 10TH ENDS LOSING STREAK
Bill Virdon hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the tenth inning, scoring Geno Cimoli with the winning run as the Pirates snapped a seven game losing skid with a 2-1 win over the Dodgers.
Starters, Vern Law and Don Drysdale had a battle royal, with the Bucs taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with an unearned run. Law was tossing shutout ball until he faltered in the ninth. Norm Larker singled, as did John Roseboro, sending Larker to third. The Bucs brought the infield in and were able to nail Larker at the plate on a Maury Wills grounder. Later in the inning, Jim Gilliam was able to single in the tying run.
Fred Green(3-2) replaced Law for the tenth. He retired the Dodgers with no damage done and it was on to the last of the ninth for Pittsburgh. Cimoli singled, as did pinch hitter, Rocky Nelson, both off Palmquist. With runners on first and third, Virdon, who was 0-4 to that point, hit the flyball that ended it.
