BUCS BURN THROUGH FIVE PITCHERS BUT WIN 7-6, IN LAST OF TENTH
Vern Law started, but was largely ineffective, giving up four runs in just four innings. The Pirates went through four more pitchers in a see saw battle with the Reds. Pittsburgh scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, to break a 4-4 tie.
However, that lead was short lived, as Cincinnati retied the game when Wally Post clubbed a two run homerun off Elroy Face, in the top of the eighth.
The game moved into the tenth, with Joe Gibbon(2-2) setting the Reds down in the top of the inning. In Pittsburgh’s last at bats, Bill Mazeroski singled then Don Hoak walked. Bill Virdon skied one to center, but then Rocky Nelson pinch hit for Gibbon and knocked in Maz with the game winner.
