PIRATES SPLIT ERROR FILLED TWINBILL WITH PHILLIES
Poor fielding was the highlight of a double header, which Pittsburgh split with Philadelphia. The Pirates took the opener, 8-5, while Philadelphia took the second game, 9-2.
The Pirates committed a total of six errors, three in each game. Shockingly, Roberto Clemente bungled fly balls in each game, while Don Hoak, Dick Groat, Smokey Burgess, Geno Cimoli and Jim Umbricht tallied an error each.
Despite his fielding mistakes, Clemente had a good day at the plate in the opener. He was 4-5, hitting his (5th) homerun. Harvey Haddix(3-2) got the victory on the mound in the 8-5 win.
Philadelphia turned the tables in game two, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second and four runs in the eighth, in a 9-2 pasting. Charlie Daniels(0-2) took the lumps in a spot start.
