BUCS SNAP 4 GAME SKID WITH LAW ON THE MOUND
Pittsburgh ended a four game losing streak by defeating San Francisco, 5-3. Vernon Law(6-2) was the winning pitcher.
It was by no means Law’s best performance. The Giants outhit the Pirates, 12-8 and he only had three strikeouts, but he didn’t walk a single batter. Just having Law or Friend on the hill seems to brighten the mood of the team.
Reliever, Bennie Daniels got into real trouble in the seventh. He gave up a lead off triple to Eddie Bressoud. Then after retiring pinch hitter, Dave Philley, he surrendered an rbi single to Don Blasingame. Joey Amalfitano then tagged Daniels for the third hit of the inning, singling and sending Blasingame to third.
Manager, Danny Murtaugh was on the top step of the dugout, poised to change pitchers, but he decided to stay with Daniels. His hunch proved correct as he fanned Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda back to back.
Don Hoak(8) continues to impress in the leadoff spot. For the second time this season, he has homered on the game’s first pitch. He finished with two hits and a walk. Roberto Clemente was a sparkplug, reaching base four out of five times and scoring twice.
The rubber game of the series is tomorrow, with Bob Friend squaring off against Jack Sanford.
