Pittsburgh and San Francisco played to a split in yesterday’s doubleheader. The Pirates won the opener, 12-11 in a slugfest, scoring five times in the seventh, then holding off the Giants who tallied three runs in the top of the eighth.
Bill Virdon tied a Stratball single game record for runs batted in with 6. He had a solo homerun(6); a two run single and a bases clearing triple. Pittsburgh also got a homerun from Rocky Nelson(2). Elroy Face(2-2) earned the win. Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda went deep for the Giants.
Game two was all San Francisco in a 10-3 laugher. Vern Law(6-4) had his second straight poor start, getting tagged for five runs(one unearned) in just three innings. Mike McCormick scattered eight hits in a complete game win for the Giants.
Pittsburgh next hosts the L.A. Dodgers before again heading out on the road. Here are the other National League Scores: Chicago 11 Milwaukee 5; Los Angeles 10 Philadelphia 6. Only games scheduled.
