DODGERS SCORE 3 RUNS IN TOP OF THE 8TH TO BEAT BUCS, 4-3
L.A. took 3 out of 4 from Pittsburgh, winning the final game in the series by a 4-3 score, after the Dodgers rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning off of Harvey Haddix(4-5).
Pittsburgh had a 3-1 lead heading into the fateful frame, when Haddix walked Frank Howard, then gave up back to back singles to Gil Hodges and Tommy Davis. The latter’s hit made it 3-2, then reliever, Bennie Daniels got Maury Wills to fly out for the second out of the inning.
The Pirates weren’t out of it, though, as Daniels uncorked a wild pitch, plating Hodges with the tying run. Joe Pigantano singled and pinch hitter Willie Davis doubled, putting Los Angeles in front, before Elroy Face came in and struck out Jim Gilliam, ending the inning.
Pittsburgh went quietly in the eighth and ninth, spoiling a 3-4 day from Hal Smith. The backup catcher, not known for his speed, electrified the Forbes Field crowd with a pair of triples, both on balls that got loose in the vast centerfield region.
The Bucs will now head out on the road, beginning with a July 4th, Firecracker Double Header at County Stadium in Milwaukee, vs the first place Braves.
Other National League scores: Chicago 7 Cincinnati 5; San Francisco 11 Philadelphia 5; Milwaukee 4 St. Louis 3.
