BUCS TAKE BOTH ENDS OF HOLIDAY TWINBILL WITH BRAVES

Pittsburgh cut Milwaukee’s lead in the National League by two full games, winning both games of the Independence Day doubleheader.

The Pirates captured game one with a fantastic pitching performance by Vernon Law(7-4), in a 5-1 win. Law held the Braves to just one run on four hits, with mound mate, Lew Burdette, tagging the Pirate starter for the only run on a solo homerun in the third inning.

The Bucs scored three runs in the top of the seventh, to put the game away. Bill Mazeroski hit an rbi triple, and then scored on a second base hit by Law himself. Don Hoak pitched in with his (10th) homer.

The second game was closer, 4-3, with Milwaukee tallying three runs in the third inning, then Pittsburgh getting a run in the seventh, eighth and ninth, to take the lead for good.

Joe Christopher(2) came off the bench to hit a pinch hit homerun in the top of the ninth.

The final game of the series pits Bob Friend against Carl Willey.
