4 PIRATE PITCHERS COMBINE TO SHUTOUT REDS IN 10 INNINGS
Four different Pirate pitchers combined to hold the Cincinnati Reds scoreless, in a 2-0 win at Crosley Field.
A lack of being able to push a run across the plate kept the score zero to zero, through nine full innings. Dick Stuart tripled with one out in the top of the tenth, then Roberto Clemente singled him in, for an extra insurance run as the Pirates took the 2-0 lead, which turned out to be the final score.
Vinegar Bend Mizell started the game and pitched six innings, allowing just two hits and two walks, against four strikeouts, but the Buccos, despite 12 hits in the game, were stymied at every turn. Pittsburgh had six runners in scoring position, once the bases were loaded, but could not plate a run in regulation.
Tom Cheney took over for Mizell and after two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, walked two straight, then surrendered an infield single, loading the bases for the Reds. Cheney buckled down and fanned Billy Martin to get out of trouble.
Joe Gibbon then tossed an inning, before Bennie Daniels(1-3) pitched the final two, earning his first win of the year, in the process.
Pittsburgh, now having won four straight, takes on Cincinnati again today, before heading to Philadelphia. Milwaukee lost, so the Bucs sit just one game back.
Other National League scores: Chicago 10 St. Louis 1; Los Angeles 10 San Francisco 0; Philadelphia 8 Milwaukee 5.
