CIMOLI ERROR IS COSTLY AS PIRATES LOSE TO PHILS, 2-1
An error by Gino Cimoli in the bottom of the eighth inning was instrumental in Philadelphia’s 2-1 comeback win over Pittsburgh.
With one out, Tony Taylor singled off Elroy Face(3-3), then Pancho Herrera followed with another base hit, that Cimoli bungled in right field, misplaying the ball into a single and a two base error. That allowed Taylor to score the tying run; then Ken Walters doubled, plating Herrera with the go ahead tally.
The Bucs got a runner on with one out in the top of the ninth, but then Dick Groat hit into a game ending double play.
Though Face earned the loss, starter Vinegar Mizell was probably the most disappointed as he was pitching a 1-0 shutout, when pinch hit for in the eighth.
[Note: In real life, this would begin the All Star break, of which two separate games were played in 1960. There will be no ASG in this replay.]
The Pirates lost ground to Milwaukee, who beat the Reds and will face the Braves on July 14th in a makeup of their Memorial Day rainout.
Other National League scores: Milwaukee 7 Cincinnati 1; Los Angeles 11 St. Louis 7; San Francisco 5 Chicago 3.
