PIRATES SNATCH VICTORY FROM DEFEAT WITH 3 RUNS IN BOTTOM OF 9TH
In a make up game from Memorial Day, the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Braves in stunning fashion, scoring three times in the bottom of the ninth inning, after Milwaukee scored twice in the top of the ninth. The result was a 5-4 victory for the Bucs, which puts them a half game back in the standings.
Milwaukee got to Harvey Haddix early, scoring twice in the top of the first. The Pirates chipped away, getting a run each in the third and fourth innings.
Haddix settled down and the score remained tied until the top of the ninth, when, with two out and a man on, Johnny Logan homered for the Braves, giving them a 4-2 lead.
Things looked bleak, but in their last at bats, Burgess and Hoak singled, then Mazeroski doubled. Rocky Nelson pinch hit and lined out to first, but Geno Cimoli singled in the tying run and then Dick Groat plated the winning run. Clem Labine(2-0) picked up the win in relief.
Pittsburgh now welcomes Cincinnati for a four game series.
