FRANK HOWARD HOMERUN ENDS FIFTEEN INNING MARATHON

Harvey Haddix and Don Drysdale hooked up in one of the great pitching battles in Stratball history, each battling through a regulation scoreless game, but in the bottom of the fifteenth inning, Frank Howard’s homer off Fred Green(3-3) finally ended it.

Drysdale went 11 innings before being relieved, striking out an amazing 14 in that span. He also tied a record for consecutive strikeouts in a game with five, when he fanned the last two batters in the fifth inning, then struck out the side in the sixth.

The Pirates had their chances, twice getting a runner to third base, but were unable to bring a run across the plate. Similarly, the Dodgers missed several opportunities to score. A combination of solid pitching by Haddix and some good defense, allowed Pittsburgh to keep pace with Drysdale.

One such play came in the bottom of the fourteenth inning. Maury Wills singled and promptly stole second base. After two quick outs, Wally Moon hit a single into left, but Bob Skinner, not usually known for his arm, made a perfect throw to nab Wills at the plate.

The lengthy game would end the very next inning, when Frank Howard belted a game ending, solo homer off Green.

Both benches will likely clear for today’s game, which pits Vern Law against Stan Williams.

Other National League scores: Cincinnati 4 Chicago 1; Milwaukee 9 St. Louis 5; San Francisco 2 Philadelphia 0.
