BUCS TAKE SERIES WITH CARDS ON MIZELL MASTERPIECE
Pittsburgh won it’s latest series with St. Louis, three games to one, thanks to Vinegar Bend Mizell(10-5), who pitched one of the best games by a Pirate this year.
Mizell threw a two hit shutout, his third whitewash of the season and once again; Don Hoak provided the offense, with his team leading fifteenth homerun.
The first game of the series was a 9-1 blowout by the Buccos, games two and three were both pitchers duels, each team having won a game apiece.
In the finale, Mizell fanned seven and walked two; while mound opponent, Ray Sadecki, no slouch himself, allowed the aforementioned one run, on just three hits. He struck out four batters and walked two, though he did hit Rocky Nelson twice with errant pitches.
The Pirates gained some ground back on the Braves, who fell to the Giants. The team is off tomorrow, then Pittsburgh will wind up their latest road trip with a three game set against the last place Chicago Cubs.
Other National League scores: San Francisco 5 Milwaukee 0; Philadelphia 7 Chicago 5; Los Angeles 2 Cincinnati 0.
