PIRATES THROTTLE CUBS IN SERIES OPENER
Pittsburgh took care of last place Chicago rather easily, banging out 12 hits in a 9-1 victory. Dick Stuart and Roberto Clemente had three hit days, with Stuart(13) and Hal Smith(4), clubbing homers.
Harvey Haddix(6-5) spun a complete game four hitter, narrowly missing a shutout, when Frank Thomas hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the ninth.
Vernon Law faces Glen Hobbie in the next game.
