CHICAGO CUBS END LONG LOSING STREAK IN STYLE BY POUNDING PIRATES

After scoring only two runs over the first two games; the Chicago Cubs took the final game of the series and put an end to a ten game skid at the same time, by pounding the Pirates in a 10-4 win.

Bob Friend started and left after six innings, with the score tied at 3. Then the Bucs bullpen came in and put on one of their most embarrassing displays this year. Jim Umbricht(2-6), who would be tagged as the losing pitcher, was first into the arena of shame. He allowed a triple, single and two walks before giving way to Clem Labine. His time on the mound was brief, but he still had time for a walk, which forced in a run.

Then came Tom Cheney, who proceeded to walk the bases loaded. Next up was Bennie Daniels, who issued a free pass to the first man he faced, Richie Ashburn. That’s four consecutive base on balls and eight total in the game to that point. Ernie Banks then doubled in two runs. Cheney put Altman aboard with the ninth walk of the day. Ron Santo hit into a double play, but the Pirates still had an out to get. Dick Groat made an error, which led to Chicago’s tenth run, then finally Tappe grounded out to end the agony.

The National League is dark tomorrow and the Pirates are glad of it. In other action, St. Louis took over first place from the Braves, the first time Milwaukee has been out of the top spot since June 14.

Other National League scores: Los Angeles 7 Milwaukee 5; San Francisco 6 Chicago 2; St. Louis 9, 5 Philadelphia 2, 3.
