SKINNER KNOCKS IN WINNING RUN IN BOTTOM OF 9TH AS BUCS WIN, 2-1

Pittsburgh kicked off a long homestand with a thrilling win by defeating Los Angeles in a close, 2-1 game.

Stan Williams squared off against Vinegar Bend Mizell, with the latter not allowing a hit through the first five innings. Pittsburgh scored first, in the last of the fourth, courtesy of a Maury Wills error.

The Dodgers tied the game in the top of the seventh, when Joe Pignatano walked, advanced on a sacrifice, then after Wills lined out, scored on a Jim Gilliam double.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth. L.A. got two quick outs, but then Bill Virdon singled and Dick Groat doubled. Virdon had to pull up at third, thanks to a strong throw from Wally Moon.

With runners on second and third and two out, Bob Skinner came through with the base hit that won it for the Pirates. Joe Gibbon(4-2) notched the win.

Harvey Haddix will face Johnny Podres today.
