THURSDAY, AUGUST 4TH, 1960. AT PITTSBURGH. PIRATES 4 LOS ANGELES 3
Pirate fans bit their nails as Elroy Face was called upon to pitch to pinch hitter, Duke Snider, with the tying run at third and two out in the bottom of the ninth. Face came through, getting Snider to pop out and preserving a 4-3 Pirates win. A solo homerun by Smokey Burgess(5) in the second inning gave the Pirates the early lead. They would add a run in the fourth, but Los Angeles would tie it with two runs in the top of the eighth. The Dodger bullpen had a meltdown in the Pirate eighth, surrendering four walks and a single, as Pittsburgh went back on top, 4-2. In the top of the ninth, Bucs reliever, Bennie Daniels(2-4) got the first two outs quickly, but then an untimely error by Dick Groat and a triple by Bob Lillis, put the tying run just 90 feet away. Pitching to just one batter, Face earned his 9th save.
Other National League scores: Chicago 5 Cincinnati 3; San Francisco 6 Philadelphia 7; St. Louis 4 Milwaukee 2.
