THURS, AUG 11 THRU SUN, AUG 14. GM#’S 107-111

In a big, five game series with the first place St. Louis Cardinals, the Pirates ended up taking four out of five games. After getting bombed in the opening game of the series, the Battlin’ Bucs roared back to take the next four straight. Here’s how it shook out.

As noted, the Cardinals routed the Pirates in game one, winning by a 13-2 margin. St. Louis sent 13 men to the plate in the top of the eighth, scoring 10 runs, the most in one inning by any team this season. Stan Musial’s grand slam was the highlight. Vinegar Bend Mizell(10-7) took the loss.

The next game saw the Bucs flip the script, handing the Cards a 9-3 defeat. Bob Skinner(9), Rocky Nelson(6) and Don Hoak(16) all hit homeruns. Harvey Haddix(7-6) earned the win.

Game three was the closest of the series, with Pittsburgh pulling out a 5-4 win in the bottom of the ninth, on a game winning sacrifice fly by Bill Virdon. The Bucs won despite three errors. Elroy Face(4-3) notched the win in relief.

Finally, the two teams played a Sunday double header, which the Pirates swept. Bob Friend(13-6) got the 6-2 win in the first game, behind Bob Skinner’s three hit effort. In the second game of the twinbill, Tom Cheney started and was tagged for three runs through five and a third. Fred Green(5-3) came in and pitched 3 and two thirds of scoreless ball as the Pirates were winners by a score of 5-3. Joe Christopher was terrific off the bench. He filled in for Skinner in left and was 2-4, with a double and two rbi’s.
