1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

MONDAY, AUGUST 15TH THRU WED, AUG 17TH. GM#’S 112-115

In their most recent series against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Pirates won 3 out of 4; on a very successful homestand in which they were 12-6.

In the first game, Vinegar Bend Mizell(10-8) was out pitched by Art Mahaffey, who tossed a complete game, three hitter, in a 3-1 Phillies win. Mahaffey lost a shutout when Rocky Nelson(6) homered in the bottom of the ninth.

Game two saw Pittsburgh jump out to a 7-1 lead, then hold on as a scrappy Phils club battled back. The Pirates held on to win, 7-6, with Harvey Haddix(8-6) earning the W. Bob Skinner’s(10) grand slam in the fourth inning highlighted the offense. Nelson stayed hot with a triple and a single.

Rocky Nelson was again the hero in game three, which Pittsburgh won in thrilling fashion, 6-4. Nelson broke a 4-4 tie, by belting a walkoff homerun(7), with Bob Skinner aboard. Jim Umbricht(3-6) earned the win in relief. He walked two batters in the top of the ninth, but also fanned two, holding Philadelphia scoreless and setting up Nelson’s dramatic moment.

The finale saw steady, Vernon Law(12-4) lead the Buccos to a 3-1 victory. Roberto Clemente, Dick Groat and Skinner each had two hits.

Pittsburgh now heads out on the road, beginning with a four game series against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Pirates are in a virtual tie with the Milwaukee Braves, both teams just one game back of the St. Louis Cardinals.
