1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

TUES, AUG 23 TO THURS, AUG 25TH. GM#’S 120-122. WRIGLEY FIELD, CHICAGO.

The Pirates took advantage of playing a last place team by sweeping the Chicago Cubs, three straight games. Two of those were shutouts.

The first game was a 6-4 Pittsburgh win, with the Bucs scoring three runs in the top of the eighth to put the game away. Dick Stuart(16) hit a homerun and Tom Cheney(3-8) earned the win in relief.

Game two was the first of two shutouts. Bob Friend(14-6) got his first whitewash of the year, beating the Cubs, 1-0. Don Cardwell pitched nearly as well as Friend as both hurlers allowed just 3 hits. The lone run in the game came on Smokey Burgess'(7th) clout of the season.

Harvey Haddix(11-8) made it back to back blanks, with his 6th complete game and 4th shutout in the third game, which the Pirates won, 7-0. Hal Smith belted two homers(5,6). Bill Mazeroski and Dick Groat had two hits apiece.

The sweep puts Pittsburgh in a three way tie for first place in the National League. Next for the Buccos is a crucial three game series in St. Louis against the Cardinals.
