1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

SAT, SEPT 3RD, TO SUN, SEPT 4TH. GM’S 130-131. FORBES FIELD, PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Pirates continued their record setting winning streak by taking both games from the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4 and 9-2. That is 13 straight wins by the ’60 Pirates, which is a new Stratball record for consecutive wins.

In the first game, Pittsburgh jumped out to a 5-0 lead, then held off a hard charging Phils team to win by one run. Bill Virdon(10) homered and Vinegar Bend Mizell(12-8) collected the win on the mound.

The Buccos had a much easier time in game two, winning handily by a score of 9-2. Bill Mazeroski(5) clubbed a three run homer in the second inning and also doubled. Dick Groat had three hits. A red hot, Harvey Haddix won his sixth straight decision, improving to (12-6). He also helped out with the stick, lacing a two run single in the eighth inning.

The Pirates take on the always dangerous Milwaukee Braves in the Labor Day twinbill, plus a third game on Tuesday.
