MON, SEPT 12 TO TUES, SEPT 13. GM’S 138, 139. FORBES FIELD, PITTSBURGH
A poor series against the San Francisco Giants drops Pittsburgh’s lead against Milwaukee to five games.
Pittsburgh lost both games of a short, two game set against the Giants. Elroy Face blew a save opportunity in the first game by giving up a one out, pinch hit homerun to Jim Marshall in the top of the ninth. It was the first homer allowed by Face since June 23rd and also broke a 12 inning scoreless streak for the reliever. The Pirates would lose in 13 innings, 7-5. Fred Green(6-4) was tagged for two runs in the top of the 13th.
Vinegar Bend Mizell(13-9) was bombed in the second game, as San Francisco shelled Pittsburgh, 12-3. Orlando Cepeda belted a pair of homers as did Felipe Alou. Dick Groat managed three hits for the Pirates in a losing cause.
The Bucs will try to maintain their lead in the race as they take on Los Angeles in another short series.
