1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

FRI, SEPT 16TH TO SUN, SEPT 18TH. GM’S 142-144. CROSLEY FIELD, CINCINNATI

As a front running team, the Pittsburgh Pirates did what front running teams are supposed to do, that is, dispatch inferior teams. That the Pirates did, in a three game set at Crosley Field in Cincinnati.

The Bucs were supposed to have played Fri, Sat and Sun. But Saturday’s game was washed out, therefore necessitating a Sunday double header. Dick Stuart had a series for the ages, going 7 for 15, with three homeruns, a triple and a double. As is his wont, Stuart also whiffed five times. The big first sacker slugged a pair in Friday’s 12-3 shelling, #’s(17) and (18). Vernon Law(13-4) earned the win. He then clubbed #(19) in an 8-2 win in the Sunday opener. Not to be outdone, Don Hoak slammed his team leading (20th) homer, as he and Stuart vie for the team lead. Bill Mazeroski(6) also went deep. Vinegar Bend Mizell(14-9) defeated Cal McLish in that game.

The Sunday finale saw Pittsburgh winning 9-6, with the Pirates tallying 5 runs in the top of the ninth, then holding on, while the Reds collected three of their own in the last of the ninth. Clem Labine(5-0) won to stay unbeaten on the year.

Milwaukee won on Friday and Sunday, dropping a half game in the process. They are now five games back and Pittsburgh’s magic number for the flag is 6.
