THURS, SEPT 22. GM’S 147, 148. FORBES FIELD , PITTSBURGH
Pittsburgh dropped both ends of a double header to Chicago, while the rest of the league was idle. The Milwaukee Braves remain four games behind the Pirates and the Bucs Magic # remains at four.
Vinegar Bend Mizell(14-10) dropped a 4-2 decision to the Cubs in game one. Pittsburgh led 2-1, through six, but Chicago plated three runs in the top of the seventh, to pull away. The Pirates got both their runs on solo homeruns from Bill Virdon(12) and Dick Stuart(22).
Chicago starter, Don Cardwell was the hero in every way, not only getting the complete game win, but also lacing three hits, including a game changing, three run homer in the seventh.
The second game ended 9-7, in favor of the Cubs. The Pirates rallied late, but fell behind 4-0 in the first, when Harvey Haddix was drummed out of that inning. Because of the Pirates scoring later on, Tom Cheney(5-9) was tagged with the loss. Ernie Banks and Frank Thomas homered for the Cubs, while Ron Santo tripled. Hal Smith hit his (9th) for Pittsburgh in a losing cause.
Now the Pirates must travel to Milwaukee for a three game set with the Braves. They are still the odds on favorite to take the pennant, but the Braves are hanging around and Pittsburgh has now lost 3 straight games.
