SERIES #10. THREE GAMES, WON 2 OF 3. MINNESOTA VS CHICAGO
The Chicago White Sox briefly tasted first place in the American League West after taking two of three from the Minnesota Twins at home. The scores were, 1-0, 4-1 and then a 5-4 loss.
Game one was a terrific pitcher’s duel between Tom Bradley(3-1) and Minnesota’s Jim Perry. After eight and a half scoreless innings, the White Sox won in the bottom of the ninth, when Bill Melton reached on an error and later scored on Ed Herrmann’s game winning sacrifice fly. Three errors really hurt the Twins in this one. It was the first shutout posted by Bradley.
Eddie Fisher(3-1) and his teammates had a little more breathing room in game two, winning by a three run margin, 4-1. Rich Morales(1) scored twice and clubbed his first homerun.
In the final game, starter, Stan Bahnsen(3-1) led 4-3 heading into the eighth, but then stumbled and gave up two runs. Eric Soderholm’s sacrifice fly was actually allowed by Goose Gossage, but the run was charged to Bahnsen. The White Sox hit three solo homers in this game. Bill Melton(5); Mike Andrews(1) and Tom Egan(1).
As noted, Chicago was in first place briefly, but the A.L.West is tightly bunched and they are currently in second place.
Next series: 3 games vs California.
