SERIES #11. THREE GAMES, SWEPT SERIES. CALIFORNIA VS CHICAGO.
Well, after their latest series sweep, the White Sox are in sole possession of first place by a game and a half over Oakland. Minnesota has dropped four games in a row, falling to third place.
Chicago took 3 straight from last place California, winning by scores of 6-3, 6-0 and 6-5. The first game was another no decision for Wilbur Wood, the fourth straight time that has occurred in a Wood start. The White Sox won in dramatic fashion when Dick Allen(14) belted a game winning, three run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Dave Lemonds(2-0) won in relief.
Game two saw Tom Bradley(4-1), the Sox hottest pitcher right now, toss his second shutout in a row. He pitched a six hit, whitewash against the Angels, fanning eight, while allowing only two walks. Mike Andrews led the offense with three hits.
The last game saw Goose Gossage blow a save opportunity and get a win in the same day. Gossage was pitching in the top of the ninth, trying to protect a 5-4 lead. He gave up a one out single to Vada Pinson, who quickly stole second base, his second theft of the game. Bob Oliver, who had homered earlier against Steve Kealey, singled in the tying run. But in the Chicago ninth, California reliever, Don Ross had two on and two out, when Andrews singled in the game winner. Gossage(1-0), being the pitcher of record, logged his first win of the year. Bill Melton(6) and Tom Egan(2) each homered.
So despite being outhit in two of the three games, Chicago won two of those contests in the bottom of the ninth inning.
