SERIES# 18. THREE GAMES, LOST TWO. CHICAGO AT NEW YORK.
The White Sox lost their latest series with the New York Yankees, dropping the first two games, 7-3 and 5-4, before avoiding getting swept by winning the finale, 4-1.
In both of the first two games, Chicago had the lead early, but couldn’t hold it and ended up losing. The Yankees rocked Tom Bradley(7-3) in the opener, tagging him for five runs, including a pair of homeruns by Bobby Murcer. Thurman Munson also homered in that game. Carlos May and Mike Andrews each had two hits in the loss.
Game two saw Eddie Fisher pitch 6.1 innings before leaving the game with a 4-2 lead, however he had issued two straight walks, with one out, before yielding to Terry Forster(1-3). The reliever couldn’t get out of the jam, issuing a two run double to Johnny Callison, then an rbi single to Murcer. The White Sox ended up losing, 5-4. This, despite two homeruns by Dick Allen(17,18). The slugging first sacker had been entrenched in a homer drought, having not gone deep since May 26.
Stan Bahnsen’s(5-2) second straight complete game, prevented the White Sox getting swept. He allowed just one run on five hits, a Ron Blomberg homerun was the only tally for New York. Stan struck out six and walked just one. On the offensive end, backup catcher, Chuck Brinkman had a great day, going 3-4 with a double, run scored and an rbi.
The White Sox road trip continues on to Boston, as the Pale Hose take on the Crimson Hose, for three games, including a doubleheader.
