1972 Chicago White Sox Replay

SERIES #22. TWO GAMES, LOST BOTH. CHICAGO AT KANSAS CITY

The White Sox were probably singing, “Kansas City, let me out!”, rather than, “here I come”, after the Royals took two games in a short series, both by shutout.

Tom Bradley(9-4) was beaten 1-0, by Bruce Del Canton. The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth, when Lou Pinella stroked a leadoff double. Richie Scheinblum lined a hard shot off the wall, which was retrieved quickly by Pat Kelly. Seeing he had no chance to throw out Sweet Lou, Kelly noticed Richie’s wide turn around first and threw behind him to nail him at first. The run still scored, though, and that 1-0 score would hold up the rest of the way. Del Canton limited Chicago to just five hits in his shutout win. Bradley worked six, allowing eight hits, along with seven strikeouts. He also hit a batter. Vincente Romo tossed the final two innings.

Game two was another whitewash, this time by Paul Splittorff, who always seems to give the White Sox trouble. Splittorff put a nifty, three hit shutout on his resume, also fanning six and issuing one base on balls. Cy Acosta(3-1) was the losing pitcher, in relief of Eddie Fisher.

Oakland won both of their games with Texas and now have a one game lead over the Sox. The two top teams in the A.L. West will play against each other in the next four games as Chicago returns to Comiskey Park.
