SERIES #25. FOUR GAMES, LOST THREE OF FOUR. DETROIT AT CHICAGO
It was a rough series, as the White Sox wrapped up their homestand by losing three out of four to the Detroit Tigers. Luckily, Oakland lost twice, so the damage was less than it could have been.
In the opening game, Wilbur Wood(6-5) dropped his third straight decision in a 4-1 loss. Al Kaline had a two run homerun. Once again, the White Sox failed to cash in opportunities. They had runners in scoring position seven times, yet scored only one run.
Game two was a closer battle, but Detroit won 2-1, when Dick McAuliffe doubled in the top of the ninth and was driven in by Kaline. Tom Bradley(11-5) took the loss.
Chicago saw their only win come in game three. Eddie Fisher(7-3) and Goose Gossage combined to blank the Tigers, 2-0, on just four hits. The White Sox got an unearned run in the first, then Mike Andrews doubled and scored in the second.
Detroit’s Mickey Lolich returned the favor in the finale, shutting out Chicago, 4-0. Spot starter, Dave Lemonds(2-4), who hasn’t come close to repeating the seven scoreless innings he threw in his first start, took the loss. Norm Cash homered for the Tigers.
The team will look to regroup, as they head out on the road. They first travel to Cleveland to play the Indians in a three game set.
