1972 Chicago White Sox Replay

SERIES #27. FOUR GAMES, SPLIT SERIES. CHICAGO AT BALTIMORE

The Chicago White Sox won two of their four games with the Baltimore Orioles. All the games were low scoring and close. Meanwhile, Oakland won all three of their games against the New York Yankees.

Chicago won the first one, 3-2, behind Eddie Fisher(8-3). The Sox led 3-0, when a two run, seventh inning, homerun, by Brooks Robinson closed the gap. Vincente Romo was ineffective, nearly allowing the tying run, but Steve Kealy came on and shut Baltimore down.

The Orioles bounced back in game two, winning, 2-1. Tony Muser, giving Dick Allen a break at first, drove in Chicago’s only run, when he tripled in Mike Andrews in the first inning. Stan Bahnsen held Baltimore scoreless until the bottom of the eighth, when Davey Johnson’s three bagger plated Bobby Grich with the tying run. Cy Acosta(4-4) lost the game in the bottom of the ninth, allowing a walk and two singles.

The two clubs then played a doubleheader. Baltimore won the opening game, 3-2 on a Bobby Grich walkoff homerun. Wilbur Wood(7-6) was tagged with the loss. Carlos May led Chicago’s offense with a double and two singles.

Tom Bradley(13-5) salvaged the split with his fourth shutout of the year, beating the O’s, 2-0. Though he issued four walks and hit a batter, he was able to escape unscored on. Jay Johnstone(2) homered for the White Sox.

The White Sox finish up the road trip with three games against the Detroit Tigers.
