SERIES #28. THREE GAMES, WON ONE, LOST TWO. CHICAGO AT DETROIT
The White Sox finish up a road trip in which they barely managed to keep their heads above water, finishing 5-5 over the last ten games.
They were only able to nab one out of three against the Detroit Tigers, while Oakland beat Milwaukee twice.
Dave Lemonds(2-5) gave up homeruns to Mickey Stanley and light hitting Ed Brinkman, in a 5-1 loss in the series opener. Lemonds’ downward spiral continues, which is a shame, as he is really the only pitcher outside of the starting four, who has started games before. Mike Andrews(7) homered in the loss for Chicago.
Eddie Fisher(8-4) lost to Joe Coleman, 4-3, in game two. Neither starter was sharp, but Detroit made the most of their chances, scoring on two walks and a hit batter, while Chicago stranded seven, including three who reached on walks. Dick Allen had two hits, including a triple and Ed Spiezio also had two hits for the White Sox.
Rick Reichardt(4) was the hero in game three, as his homerun in the top of the eighth put Chicago ahead, 3-2. Goose Gossage(3-0) tossed the final three innings in relief of Stan Bahnsen, to help his team avoid being swept. Carlos May kicked a double around for a two base error, allowing Ed Brinkman to score in the seventh. That ended a 20 inning scoreless streak for Gossage.
Chicago is idle on July 20th, then they return home, facing the Cleveland Indians, with games on the 21st and 22sd, then a doubleheader on July 23rd.
