SERIES #30. FOUR GAMES, SPLIT SERIES. KANSAS CITY AT CHICAGO.
Shout out to Sebastian, in the stands.
The White Sox won two games out of four against the Kansas City Royals, first splitting a doubleheader on July 27th, then dropping a 6-4 decision on July 28th, before winning the final game on July 29th, by a 7-3 score.
Goose Gossage(3-1) suffered his first loss of the year, as he allowed the go ahead run in the top of the tenth, in a 5-4, extra inning, White Sox loss in game one of the twinbill. Chicago trailed 4-1, but in the last of the eighth Mike Andrews tripled, then scored on a Dick Allen single. Rick Reichardt(4) then homered, tying the game. With one out in the top of the tenth inning, Gossage gave up a walk to Richie Scheinblum, then back to back singles to Lou Pinella and Ed Kirkpatrick, as Kansas City held on for the win.
The nightcap saw Chicago score four runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a Carlos May(7) blast, to win fairly comfortably, 6-3. It wasn’t completely comfortable, however, as this is the White Sox. With a five run lead and one out in the top of the ninth, Cy Acosta managed to walk three Royals. An Andrews error and a fielder’s choice brought in two more Kansas City runs, until Acosta struck out Scheinblum, for the final out. Pat Kelly, playing for the first time since July 12, after an injury, had two hits and stole two bases. May and Ed Spiezio also had two hits each. Terry Forster(2-4) earned the win on the mound in relief of Dave Lemonds.
Tom Bradley(13-6) looked like anything but an ace, as he was tagged for five runs over the first two innings in a 6-4 loss in game three. Chicago battled back, getting two runs from Jay Johnstone’s(3) fifth inning, two run, homerun, but they couldn’t quite catch up.
Pat Kelly’s return is a much need spark, despite the loss. He was 3-5 on the day.
The last game saw the White Sox win by the largest margin of the series, 7-3. Cy Acosta(5-4) was the winning pitcher. Kelly stayed red hot, going 3-5, with a walk and a run scored. Dick Allen had a two run triple, while Jay Johnstone, Rich Morales and Ed Herrman chipped in with two hits apiece.
Oakland, meanwhile, took two out of three from the Minnesota Twins. Speaking of the Twins, Chicago will fly there to play a two game series. The games had been scheduled early in April, but were wiped out by the player’s strike.
