SERIES #38. FOUR GAMES, SPLIT SERIES. BOSTON VS CHICAGO
Chicago took two of four from Boston, while Cleveland beat Oakland, two out of three. That means the White Sox and A’s are tied for first place in the A.L. West.
In this most recent series, Chicago beat Boston, 6-2, were bombed by them, 10-3, then lost a close, 2-1 decision, before winning the finale, 5-4.
Ed Hermann(14) homered for the third straight game in the opener and Dick Allen(33) also went deep. Eddie Fisher(10-7) earned the win. The next game was all Boston, with starter Stan Bahnsen(12-5) getting shelled. He allowed five runs in just three and a third innings. Reggie Smith hit a grand slam off reliever, Vincente Romo, in the 10-3 laugher.
Next came the August 20th twinbill. Wilbur Wood(10-8) lost the opener due to no run support, 2-1. Chicago would come back for a walkoff, 5-4 win in the finale, thanks to Ed Spiezio’s rbi single which scored Dick Allen, in the ninth. Mike Andrews poled a three run shot in this game, his(10th) Terry Forster(3-5) collected the win in relief.
