1972 Chicago White Sox Replay

SERIES #47. THREE GAMES, WON ONE, LOST TWO. CHICAGO AT CALIFORNIA

The White Sox hopes for the division crown took a hit after their latest series with the California Angels. Chicago was able to win just one game, while Oakland was sweeping the Texas Rangers. The A’s have stretched their lead in the West to four games. The game recaps follow:

Game one: California 9 Chicago 0. One day after getting blanked by Kansas City’s Steve Busby; the Angels’ Dave May turned the trick, scattering six hits in a 9-0 white wash. Eddie Fisher falls to (11-10). Rick Reichardt and Ed Herrmann each had a single and a double for the Sox.

Game two: California 2 Chicago 1. This game was close, but once again, the White Sox could not generate much offense, garnering only four hits. California gambled after replacing Nolan Ryan after just five inning, though he had allowed just one run. The move paid off though, for pinch hitter, Bob Oliver singled in two runs in the last of the fifth, both runners having reached on walks by Stan Bahnsen(14-8).

Game three: Chicago 5 California 3. The White Sox avoided the sweep, thanks to a two run homer by Herrmann(16), in the top of the ninth. Mike Andrews, very shaky in the field of late, committed two errors, which led to two unearned runs against starter, Wilbur Wood, in the bottom of the seventh. Steve Kealey(3-4) tossed two inning of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Off tomorrow(Sept 18th), the White Sox head to Alameda County Coliseum, for a two game showdown with the division leaders.
