1972 Chicago White Sox Replay

SERIES #49. THREE GAMES. WON ONE, LOST TWO. TEXAS VS CHICAGO

The White Sox are on life support as far as any pennant hopes are concerned. They dropped two games by one run to the last place Texas Rangers, before finally copping the third and final game of the series.

At the same time, the Oakland A’s were taking two out of three from Kansas City. The A’s magic number, meaning any combination of A’s wins, or White Sox losses, to clinch the division, is 2. Here are the recaps:

Game one: Texas 4 Chicago 3. Stan Bahnsen had a 1-0 lead after six innings, but the bullpen faltered, with Cy Acosta allowing two runs in the seventh, then Goose Gossage(6-3) giving up two more, in the eighth. The White Sox could only manage six hits, to ten for the Rangers.

Game two: Texas 5 Chicago 4. Each team scored three runs in the first inning. The score remained tied until the top of the seventh. Starter, Wilbur Wood gave way to Steve Kealey, who gave up a walk and two singles, putting Texas up, 4-3. Dave Lemonds replaced Kealey(3-5) and surrendered a triple to Ted Ford, who later scored, giving the Rangers a two run advantage. Chicago would get one run back in the bottom of the eighth, but that was as close as they would get.

Game three: Chicago 5 Texas 3. Somehow, the White Sox avoided being swept by the worst team in the league, as Tom Bradley(16-8) and company came away with a 5-3 win. Dick Allen had another big day, with two doubles and a single. Mike Andrews was on base all day, with two singles and two walks.

Both Chicago and Oakland are dark on Sept 25th, then the White Sox finish up their final homestand, with two games against Kansas City on Sept 26th and 27th.
