SERIES #51. THREE GAMES, WON TWO, LOST ONE. CHICAGO AT TEXAS
The White Sox won two out of three against the Texas Rangers at Arlington. Here are the game recaps:
Game one: Chicago 2 Texas 0. Wilbur Wood(14-8) pitched his fourth shutout of the season, tossing a two hitter against the Rangers. He struck out six and walked none and was in command all game. Not a single Texas runner reached second base. Jorge Orta(7) had a homer and a double to lead the offense.
Game two: Chicago 5 Texas 2. Starter and winner, Tom Bradley(17-8) allowed just one hit in five and a third innings, but a walk, hit batter and an error he committed, led to a pair of unearned runs for the Rangers in the bottom of the sixth. However, the four runs Chicago scored in the first inning were more than enough to get the job done. Three White Sox players hit homeruns. Bobby Bradford(2); Rick Reichardt(9) and Ed Herrmann(17).
Game three: Texas 5 Chicago 4. The White Sox were poised to sweep the series, taking a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but Goose Gossage(6-4) gave up a run in the eighth, then the tying and winning runs in the ninth. Because Chicago is eliminated from the postseason and for the fact they have a healthy lead on Minnesota, currently in third place; it was decided to let the Goose stay out on the mound. After striking out Dave Nelson to start the ninth, he gave up two singles, a walk, then a two run single to Larry Bittner, who had four runs batted in.
Chicago now heads to Minnesota, for their final three games of the 1972 season, against the Twins.
