SERIES #52. THREE GAMES, WON TWO, LOST ONE. CHICAGO AT MINNESOTA
Well, the 1972 Chicago White Sox replay has come to a close. On the good side, the White Sox won their final series of the year against the Minnesota Twins, but the bad news is that their poor September cost them any chance to catch the Oakland A’s.
Chicago last held first place alone on September 11th. From that point on, they went 7-11, while Oakland went 14-4. After losing twice to the Twins on Sept 11th, the A’s snapped off a seven game win streak. Here are the recaps for the final three games:
Game one: Chicago 10 Minnesota 5. Dick Allen(42, 43, 44) became the first player in Stratball history to have two games with 3 homeruns. He smacked two off starter, Dick Woodson and a third off reliever, Dave LaRoche. Carlos May(11) also went deep in the rout. Stan Bahnsen(16-8) earned the win in his final start.
Game two: Minnesota 9 Chicago 1. Wilbur Wood(14-9) had a very rough go of it in his final start of the season. He was tagged for 8 runs over two innings, including a three run homerun by Danny Thompson. Walt Williams and Ed Herrmann each had a pair of hits for Chicago.
Game three: Chicago 6 Minnesota 3. The #18 was lucky in this game, which gave the White Sox the series win. Winning pitcher, Tom Bradley notched his 18th win, while Ed Herrmann clubbed his 18th homer in the win.
