Welcome to my new Strat-o-matic baseball project. I call it the Legends League. I have made up 8 teams from all the seasons I currently have. Here are the names of the eight teams and their respective captains: Peaches-Ty Cobb; Sultans-Babe Ruth; Clippers-Joe DiMaggio; Comets-Mickey Mantle; Hammers-Hank Aaron; Terrifics – Tom Seaver; Mad Dogs-Greg Maddux and finally, the Naturals-Mike Trout.
This will be a years long project as I am plugging these teams into a 154 game schedule. But the fun for me is the journey of the games rolled and not rushing toward an end result. I will post the results of each days games here and the standings once a week or so.
As a solitary Strat player, I dislike constantly switching out players during a game, whether for defensive purposes or better hitter/pitcher matchups. Though the teams will have 25 man rosters, I select eight regulars who will play all the time and a four man pitching rotation. The only pinch hitting is done for pitchers, or in case of injury. If an injury is less than 10 games, that team will play a man short and fill in from the available roster.(The captains have injury exemptions) If more than than, I will select a new player from the appropriate era. Also, stats will only be kept on those eight regulars and the starting pitchers. Too much pencil pushing otherwise.
I have made a few concessions to the official rules, one being relief #’s for my bullpens. As many of these pitchers are only rated as starters, I have designated a relief rating of 2, for any such pitcher, meaning they can go two innings before their point of weakness fatigue factor comes into play.
Here are the results of game play for April 13. Opening Day.
Comets 6 Clippers 3. The Comets tagged Dizzy Dean for three homeruns in the first inning, two of those by Roy Campanella. WP-Warren Spahn(1-0) LP-Dizzy Dean(0-1) HR-Campanella(2), Mantle(1), Banks(1), Williams, T.(1)
Hammers 8 Peaches 7. Willie Mays becomes the second multi homer guy on opening day and his second is a walkoff winner. WP-Billy O’Dell(1-0) LP-Walter Johnson(0-1)
Mad Dogs 6 Sultans 5. Rafael Palmeiro’s seventh inning, pinch hit, two run blast, gave the Mad Dogs a comeback win. WP-Kevin Brown(1-0) LP-Dazzy Vance(0-1)
