Mad Dogs at Sultans Gm#1: Sultans 7 Mad Dogs 0. Dazzy Vance was one out away from pitching a no hitter, when Barry Bonds tripled. With the no hit bid gone, Vance then walked Mark McGwire, but was able to get Ken Griffey Jr. to ground out, ending the ballgame. Tris Speaker, Ray Chapman and George Sisler all had two hits each. Mad Dogs at Sultans Gm#2: Mad Dogs 7 Sultans 2. After being nearly no hit in the opener, the Mad Dogs bounced back in game two, with a 7-2 win. With the B squad in, Albert Belle homered and Craig Biggio smacked two doubles. Kevin Brown was one out away from a shutout, but surrendered back to back homers to Happy Felsch and George Kelly. Clippers at Comets Gm#1: Comets 4 Clippers 2. Warren Spahn limited the Clippers to just two hits, unfortunately, two of them were solo homeruns. Despite that, Spahn held on for a 4-2 win, in the first of two games at Comets Coliseum. WP-Warren Spahn(2-0) LP-Red Ruffing(0-2) HR-Mantle(4); Foxx(3), Musial(2).
Clippers at Comets Gm#2: Clippers 10 Comets 3. Save for Stan Musial and Jimmie Foxx, it was all B squad for the Clippers as they hammered the Comets in game two. Musial and Foxx homered for the winners; Roy Sievers and Yogi Berra, for the winners. WP-Hal Newhouser(1-0) LP-Early Wynn(0-1) HR-Foxx(4), Musial(3); Berra(1), Sievers(1). Peaches at Hammers. Peaches 5 Hammers 1. After what was a pitcher’s duel for six innings between Don Drysdale and and Rube Waddell, the Peaches erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jim Maloney had a rough relief appearance for the Hammers by walking in two runs with the bases loaded. WP-Rube Waddell(1-0) LP-Don Drysdale(0-1). INJURY: WILLIE MAYS 3 DAYS.
Naturals at Terrifics: Naturals 4 Terrifics 0. Clayton Kershaw and Mark Melancon combined on a five hit shutout, leading the Naturals to their first win of the year. Bryce Harper and Joey Votto went deep for the Naturals. WP-Clayton Kershaw(1-0) LP-Bob Gibson(1-1). HR- Harper(1), Votto(1).
