GAMES OF APRIL 19.
Injuries have really taken a toll on the league. Thus far, Honus Wagner, Babe Ruth, Sammy Sosa, Willie Mays, Joe DiMaggio and Bryce Harper have all spent time on the disabled list and the season is but a few days old. Harper is out for 30 days, so a replacement will be drafted shortly.
Terrifics 5 Sultans 3. The Terrifics broke out of the gate quickly, scoring five runs over the first two innings against Lefty Williams. They held on for a 5-3 win as the Sultans chipped away, even outhitting them, but falling short in the run column. WP-Steve Carlton(2-0) LP-Lefty Williams(0-1) HR-Ray Chapman(1).
Terrifics 3 Sultans 1. (10 inn) The Sultans’ Burleigh Grimes took a 1-0 lead into the ninth, but Graig Nettles hit a game tying homerun. The game moved into extra innings, with Red Faber on in relief for the Sultans. He was tagged for two more runs in the tenth by the Terrifics. Sparky Lyle earned the win, with Jim Palmer pitching the bottom of the tenth to earn the save. WP-Sparky Lyle(1-0) LP-Red Faber(0-1) HR-Graig Nettles(1).
Clippers 15 Hammers 1. The Clippers won in a laugher, pounding Sandy Koufax and three more Hammers pitchers, in a 21 hit drubbing. Jackie Robinson paced the high powered offense, going 4-6, with a triple, double and two singles. He scored three runs as did Stan Musial, who also homered. Henry Aaron’s first homer of the year was the Hammers lone run. WP-Carl Hubbell(2-0) LP-Sandy Koufax(0-2) HR-Musial(4), Seminick(1); Aaron(1). INJURY: JOE DIMAGGIO-4 DAYS.
Mad Dogs 3 Naturals 2 (10 inn) The Mad Dogs broke a 2-2 tie, when Alex Rodriguez doubled in the top of the tenth, then was singled in by Ken Griffey Jr. Bryce Harper suffered a bad leg injury running to first and will miss 30 days at least. WP-Billy Wagner(1-0) LP-Javier Lopez(0-2). INJURY: BRYCE HARPER-30 DAYS.
