RESULTS OF APRIL 22.
In the lone game on the schedule, the Comets edged the Peaches in a 10 inning thriller. Sherry Magee’s, five rbi, two homer(one a grand slam) game, was not enough, as Ernie Banks’ sacrifice fly in the top of the tenth inning, scored Ken Boyer, to put the Comets ahead to stay, 7-6.
Elroy Face pitched three scoreless innings, to earn the win in relief. The Comets scored the game’s first run, when Mickey Mantle scored from first on a Banks double, in the opening stanza. That good feeling didn’t last long, for Whitey Ford loaded the bases on a single, walk and hit batter, then Magee made him pay, clearing the bases with a grand slam homerun. Magee added another dinger in the bottom of the second, putting the Peaches up, 5-1.
The Comets came roaring back against Eddie Plank, in the top of the sixth. The Peaches lefty suddenly couldn’t find the strike zone and allowed two walks and three singles, before being pulled for Pete Alexander. He was able to close the door on the inning, but not before three runs had crossed the plate for the Comets.
With the score, 5-4 Peaches, Hal Chase hit a solo blast in the home half of the sixth, giving his team a slight, two run cushion. It wouldn’t be enough, though, as Mantle clubbed a two run shot, with Boyer aboard in the top of the seventh.
The score would remain knotted at six, until the top of the tenth. Chief Bender, on in relief, got the first out, but gave up singles to Boyer and Nellie Fox, then walked Mantle. With the bases loaded, Ernie Banks lofted a deep fly to center, as Boyer trotted in with the go ahead run. Face then set the Peaches down in order in the bottom of the tenth. WP-Elroy Face(1-0) LP-Chief Bender(1-1). HR-Mantle(6); Magee 2(2)gs, Chase(1).
